Prenatal Chiropractic Care and the Webster Technique

Your body is doing something remarkable

In about nine months, a pregnant body changes more than at almost any other time in life. Your center of gravity shifts forward, your lower back curve deepens, and the hormone relaxin loosens ligaments throughout your pelvis to prepare for birth.

Those changes are normal and necessary. They can also leave the pelvis, sacrum and lower spine under a lot of strain, which is why so many expecting moms look for prenatal chiropractic care.

What is the Webster technique?

The Webster technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment for pregnancy. It was developed by Dr. Larry Webster and is taught through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA).

Its goal is to find and correct misalignment of the sacrum, the triangular bone at the base of the spine, and to reduce tension in the muscles and ligaments that attach to the pelvis. When the pelvis is balanced, the nervous system that controls it can work more efficiently, and there is more room for baby to move.

One important note: the Webster technique is not a method for turning a breech baby. Its focus is the mother’s pelvic balance and nerve function. Any concerns about baby’s position should always be discussed with your OB or midwife.

Why moms choose prenatal chiropractic care

Every pregnancy is different, but common reasons moms come to see us include:

  • Lower back, hip or pelvic discomfort
  • Pain in the sacroiliac joints or pubic bone
  • Sciatic-type pain down the leg
  • Wanting to feel their best and most balanced going into labor
  • Preparing for the birth experience they hope to have

What to expect at a prenatal visit

Your visit starts with a conversation about your health history, your pregnancy so far and your goals for birth. We then use our INSiGHT technology: two scans that take only a couple of minutes but give us real-time data on how well your nervous system is functioning and adapting to the demands of pregnancy.

Adjustments are gentle and adapted to each trimester. We use pregnancy-friendly positioning and supports so you are never lying uncomfortably on your belly.

When should you start?

You can begin chiropractic care at any point in pregnancy. Many moms start in the first or second trimester to support their body as it changes. Others come in during the third trimester as they prepare for labor and birth.

We work alongside OBs, midwives and doulas, and we encourage you to keep your whole birth team informed about your care.
